Carterville, located between Carbondale and Marion, is a charming town, with a population of 5,768. Part of Williamson County in beautiful Southern Illinois, Carterville is located on Rt. 13, and just ten minutes from I-57.

Carterville Bank - Banterra Location Rt. 13

Banterra’s Carterville branch was established in 1999 and is located at 108 E. Plaza Drive, between the Dairy Queen and John Deere Dealership (SN Partners).  Banterra is involved in numerous community events including Christmas In Carterville, Carterville Block Party and Carterville Chamber of Commerce Pumpkin Path.

Like other towns in the region, Carterville’s history began with Native American Indians, traveling hunters and trappers, and pioneers searching for new territory to call their home.  Two of those pioneers would be George McNeill and Laban Carter, who fought against each other in the Civil War, but came together to establish a town.  George McNeill had a 40-acre farm located in what is now Carterville’s downtown.  With Laban Carter’s help, in 1871, they established a post office and a train depot on this land and a town name was needed.  Since there was already a Georgetown, George offered to name the town after Laban and Carterville was established, and officially incorporated in 1872.

McNeill and Carter would both discover coal on their land, signing 99-year leases with Carbondale Coal & Coke Company.  Carter shipped the first coal from Williamson County; this county would have 40 commercial mines in 1920 employing more than 10,000.  At one point, Carterville produced more coal than any other town in Illinois.

Today, the work landscape is much different for Carterville residents with various careers.  The town benefits from several small businesses, as well as John A. Logan College which has more than 10,000 full and part-time students.  SIH (Southern Illinois Healthcare) Cancer Center, which opened in 2015, treats an average of 1,500 patients each week.

Carterville Unit 5 Schools includes Tri-C Elementary, Carterville Intermediate, Carterville Jr. High and Carterville High School and is home to the Carterville Lions.
