Golconda, with a population of 654 residents, is the county seat for Pope County and located in the scenic hills of Southeastern Illinois.  Positioned directly along the Ohio River, a large portion of the town is part of the Golconda Historic District.

Golconda Bank - Banterra Location

Banterra’s Golconda branch was established in 2014 and is located at 121 E. Main Street.  The Golconda post office is nearby, as well as the Pope County Historical Society Museum and the popular Golconda Dari-Barr.

Golconda has a rich history. The town was the first permanent settlement in Pope County in 1798 and served as a ferry point on the river and was sometimes called Lusk’s Ferry.  Upon the organization of Pope County in 1816, the town was named Sarahsville, but changed the following year to Golconda, after the ancient city of Golkonda in India.  Among several historic buildings in Golconda is the First Presbyterian Church, which was built in 1869 for a congregation that began in 1819 and is the oldest continuous Presbyterian congregation in the state.

In 1838, as part of the Trail of Tears, nearly 13,000 Cherokee Indians crossed the Ohio River from Tennessee and Kentucky into Golconda by ferry (at a high price).

Dixon Springs State Park, which is 801 acres, is one of several state parks in the Illinois Shawnee Hills, located in Pope County and about ten miles from Golconda.  It is part of the Shawnee National Forest which spans 289,000 acres in Southern Illinois between the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.

Today, thousands of visitors come to Golconda annually for festivals, the outdoors and the rich history.  Banterra has sponsored some of these festivals including the Pope County Deer Festival, the Blues, Brews and BBQ Fest and the Golconda Shrimp Festival.  Golconda is located on the Ohio River Scenic Byway, the Trail of Tears National Historic Trail, the National Cross Country Bike Trail and the destination for the River-to-River Relay.
