At Banterra, we strive to be your financial partner in all aspects of your banking needs, including offering products that fit your unique needs, building strong relationships, and providing support in every way we can to help your business succeed. One of the ways that we show that support is through Banterra’s “Meet The Merchant” blog series, which provides insight into the entrepreneurial journey of some of our business customers and then promoted through our marketing channels. This month, we are excited to highlight Global Gourmet, a beloved, chef‑owned restaurant in Southern Illinois. Since opening in 2004, owner, Chef Andrea Barclay, has created a globally inspired dining experience known for its seasonal menus, intimate atmosphere, and warm hospitality. With creativity, hard work, and strong community support, Global Gourmet has continued to evolve while staying true to its original vision. Tell Us About Global Gourmet

Global Gourmet opened on April 2, 2004. It is female-owned and operated by myself. We are a full-service restaurant and bar open Wednesday-Saturday from 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. The small menu changes weekly, featuring seasonal and globally inspired dishes. The atmosphere is casual, with an ambiance that reflects a city vibe. While the restaurant offers a full bar, the focus is on wine from around the globe. Seating inside is intimate and banquette-style, reminiscent of my time spent living in New York and New Orleans. There is also a seasonal outdoor patio that seats an additional 40 guests.

What Was The Inspiration Or Motivation In Starting Your Business?

I attended culinary school at the esteemed Culinary Institute of America (CIA), graduating in 1994. After spending time in New Orleans and Greece, I returned home to Southern Illinois. I had always been fascinated by restaurants, bakeries and patisseries. I really wanted to open a chocolaterie after watching Chocolat, and because my favorite course at CIA was chocolates...but I knew I would end up bankrupt!

After not being able to find a job that suited me locally, I decided I had to create my own. I never knew what the future held, and I never dreamed it would turn out as it has.

Did You Always Dream Of Becoming An Entrepreneur?

It never crossed my mind. I graduated from Murray State University in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in education and began working at, what was then, Lincoln Jr. High School in Carbondale. After two years there, I decided that I needed something different in my life. Working in education just wasn't exciting to me. I needed passion (but kudos to all of the wonderful people working in education). Growing up as a coal miner's kid in Johnston City, Illinois, I didn't get the opportunity to go to restaurants. College changed that.

My first time in New Orleans, visiting my brother, opened my eyes to a whole new world. I thought it must be a glamorous life owning a restaurant. Little did I know! It's hard work, but I wouldn't change it for anything.

How Has Your Business Grown Over The Years?

We started as a 12-seat deli/carry-out style operation, mostly doing outside catering. Within two years, we grew into a full-service, 65-seat restaurant and bar (plus 40 spots on the seasonal patio). Little by little, I upgraded equipment, did some remodeling, adjusted hours, changed styles, all while keeping it “Global”. Our customer base has grown, and now we have "kids" who once came in with their parents and are now old enough to enjoy a drink. It's now the next generation coming in.

What Have You Done To Achieve Such Growth?

Global Gourmet has grown by putting in a tremendous number of hours, hard work and word-of-mouth. Little by little, with baby steps, we evolved. It never started as a full restaurant, nor did I intend for it to be a full restaurant, but I’m thrilled it has.

I took things very slowly starting out, only buying equipment when I had the money for it. I tried to never get in over my head. Only when I was able to add a second restroom and seat more customers, could I justify investing in a liquor license, inventory, and a remodel to add the bar.

The first year after that change, 2006, the sales skyrocketed. That was never my goal; it just happened. The challenge then became how to keep evolving and growing. There have been ups and downs, and certainly the Covid shutdown was a game-changer. I refer to certain periods of time as "the glory days of Global," such as when SIU had a large enrollment,  and we were open Monday-Saturday from 11a.m.to 2 a.m. Of course, "pre-Covid/post-Covid” changed everything with customers now coming in at a 4:30 dinner rush, instead of the once-coveted 8 p.m. reservation time.

What Is One Piece Of Advice You'd Give To Aspiring Entrepreneurs?

Always have plan A, B, C...and I say all the way to G, because nothing ever turns out the way it's planned. Be willing to adapt and be prepared to make changes, even if you don't want the change and it's uncomfortable. Be prepared for hiccups and bumps in the road, and don't expect overnight success.

I always say I'm riding the wave, and I have no idea what tomorrow will bring. Don't ever give up. If a coal miner's kid growing up in the 70's on powdered milk, instant potatoes, and having to eat squirrel can someday become a chef and restaurateur, then anything is possible!

How Does Your Community Play A Role In Your Success?

I have wonderful, loyal customers from throughout Southern Illinois and the surrounding states. The amazing regulars are my beloved core, who are like family, and the new customers are the icing on the cake.

How Has Banterra Helped Your Business To Become More Successful?

Well, I'm still in the early phase of that, as I just made the switch last fall and am still learning all Banterra offers. However, I’m so glad I made the switch, and I tell everyone. I'm always happy to give out those Banterra Bank pens to customers for credit card signatures.

I was unhappy with my former bank, for many reasons. The Mays are wonderful people and customers. Jeff and Cindy have been very supportive for many years. They encouraged me until I finally had the time to make the switch. Doing so was something I had wanted to do for a long time, it was just a matter of having the time to redirect all the auto-pay accounts and coordinate payroll transitions.
